I agree that FOX seems to be losing confidence, and understandably so, in "The X-Files". The most recent ep (1/13)came in at 66th in the ratings for the week it aired.
If XF gets renewed at all for next season, my guess is they will move it to a less distinguished time slot. Sunday nights, immediately after "The Simpsons" and "Malcolm in the Middle" is the Fox network's equivalent of beach front property on the California coast: prime real estate, and they expect whatever show is in that slot to "pay" for the privlege by bringing in good ratings. They will probably move something like "Boston Public" (Fox's highest-rated drama for the past two seasons) or "Bernie Mac" (the network's highest-rated new show) to Sundays.
I don't know that they'll renew it at all, though. The only eps so far this season that have gotten even relatively decent ratings (and still nowhere near as high as the season 4-7 eps got while running in the same time slot) have been ones like the season premiere and "TrustNo1" that focused on the Mulder/Scully/William family dynamics. It will be pretty hard to do that once both DD *and* GA have left the show!! Eps like the most recent ones which focus mostly (at least so I gathered from the previews) on Doggett and/or Reyes just don't seem to arouse much viewer interest.
