Subject: I was in an earthquake once
In reply to: detoured 's message, "I have the shakes. We just had an earthquake here!" on 22:05:28 03/27/03 Thu

I thought you Californians hardly even blinked when an earth quake happens. I got the shock of my life when I was in one about 9 yrs ago. I was sitting on the couch feeding my baby when there was this big bang and the whole house slid sideways and then slid back again. Now you would probably think "big deal" but it was a big deal to us especially considering earthquakes are almost like hens teeth here. I was in Newcastle where a couple of yrs prior to the little tremor I was in, there was a really big quake that wrecked alot of the city. We then moved there and we had that little tremor. It was quite exciting. At first I thought it was a truck crashing somewhere but then we put on the radio and found that it was a quake. It felt really wierd. I'd hate to be in a real big one. This movement lasted only about 2 seconds. Earth quakes in general just don't happen here. We have the odd tiny tremor every 10++ yrs or so and that is it. No faults to speak of. Newcastle has had quakes as it is very much sitting on top of a honey comb of coal mines. I hope you don't get any more quakes for a while. Do you have lead-up tremors? You know, before a big one hits? Or do they take everyone by surprise? Must be a bit scary.
