Season by Season

Normally at this time of year, I do some sort of season wrap up. I list my ten favorite eps of the season or my choices for five best and five worst eps of the season, or something like that. Since it would be a pretty lopsided list this year (as in, I really liked "Per Manum" and "Existance"; and I kinda/sorta liked "Alone" and I liked "Vienen" a little, but only because they mentioned "my" island in it) I decided to do a season by season list instead. Keep in mind that I'm a shipper, and my list does reflect that, but there are other reasons I liked or disliked certain seasons, as well.

I'll be leaving for vacation in a few days, so I won't be around for the next couple of weeks. Once I return, I'll visit occasionally, but probably not as frequently as I used to. As far as I'm concerned, "The X-Files" has ended as a TV series, but ended on a positive note. The next time I'll have any interest in an XF-related event will be if and when they ever do a second XF movie.

I hope everyone has a great summer!

My faves XF seasons, in order are:

1.) Season Six: I know this season got knocked a lot for being too "lighthearted" but, IMHO, it had the best MSR of any season. Three of what I (and, from what I gather, most other X-Philes and TV critics) regard as ten of the best XF eps ever — "The Unnatural", "Triangle" and "Milagro" — are from this season. Although I began watching XF midway through season four, this was the season where I really got totally "into" it — reading and writing fanfic, discussing the show on internet message boards, etc.

2.) Season Five: This was the first season that I watched in the correct order and it was a great one. From the heartbreak of eps like "Redux" and "Christmas Carol" to the lighthearted fun of "Detour" and the classic "You're my one in five billion" line from "Folie a Deux". . .these were the eps that led to me standing in line at 10 a.m. to watch "The X-Files Movie: Fight the Future" when the first showing wasn't 'til noon!

3.) Season Seven: There were some terrific eps in this season. . ."Millennium", "The Amazing Maleeni", "Requiem", "Hollywood, A.D.", "Je Souhaite", etc. Plus there was finally consumation of the MSR!! (After the final scene of "Existance" in Season 8, I think *everyone* has to accept the truth about why Mulder was sleeping naked in his bed and Scully was putting her clothes back on in his bathroom during the opening scenes of "all things".) The only thing that could have made this season better would have been if it had been, as we were told it was going to be, the final season of XF as a TV show and the bridge to the next XF movie.

4.) Season Three: A lot of what I regard as the really "classic" XF eps, like "Pusher", "Paper Clip" and "Clyde Bruckerman" are from this season. It also seemed to be when the MSR heated up; in season one Mulder and Scully were basically business associates; by season two, they were friends. During season three, it seemed the thought of being something more than friends was beginning to drift through both their minds; it was subtle, but I notice it in some of their glances, conversations, etc.

5.) Season Four: There were some really good eps in this season, like "Small Potatoes" and "Tempus Fugit/Max". But with a couple of exceptions (like SP), they pretty much backed off the growing intensity of the MSR that had begun in season three. Still, this was the season where I started watching XF on a regular basis!

6.) Season One: Sure, there were some great season one eps. The Mulder/Scully interaction was actually pretty good right from the start, too! However, we saw little or nothing of the supporting characters (Skinner, The Lone Gunmen, etc.) that we grew to know and love during later seasons.

7.) Season Two: This season suffered from GA's real-life pregnancy. Too many Scullylite or Scullyless eps. Plus too many eps that were just too high on the "gross out" factor for my taste. But "Anasazi" is still my second-favorite season finale ever!

8.) Season Eight: IMHO, this shouldn't really even count as the same show as seasons one through seven. It was more like the first season of a spinoff. . ."X-Files, the Next Generation", or something like that. However, it did have the *BEST* season finale ever; which, in my mind, is the series finale as well.

9.) Season Nine: I realize I haven't seen any eps from season nine. I never intend to. But since it will have no full-involvement Mulder eps (just maybe a few Mulder cameo appearances, and even that is still open to debate) and very few eps where Scully is in more than a couple of scenes, plus a Iot of Annoying Smiling Agent, I know it's going to be worse than all previous seasons.
