Subject: Maybe Mulder wasn't such a bad fit with the FBI, after all! (Vague Season 8 spoilers)

One of the things that used to be debated endlessly on these forums and elsewhere was: "Why did the FBI continue to allow Mulder to work as an agent?" It seemed to many of us that his continued breaking of the rules, losing of evidence, inability to ever actually solve a case in the sense of arresting someone and bringing them to trial, frequent unexplained absences, etc. would have resulted in his dismisal long before the end of season eight.
However, given the current news articles about the kind of antics *real* FBI agents have apparently been engaging in (for those of you not from the U.S. who may not have hear about this: it seems they've "misplaced" a lot of their laptop computers, including several with classifed information on them, and are also unable to account for a number of weapons) maybe an occasional agent who disappears for four or five months and then returns spouting stories of alien abduction wouldn't be considered that big of a deal!
