I agree that giving up William was sad--especially the scene when Scully had to tell Mulder that was what she did. There were a number of sad scenes though throughout the series. When Mulder chose to sit with Scully in the hospital rather than find his father's killer was sad. Also, the funeral scene when Mulder was buried has to go on my list. Losing the Lone Gunmen is right up at the top of the list as does the final scene when Mulder and Scully have to go into hiding, together yes but still alone. Any scene with Mulder or Scully crying is also somewhere on the saddest scene list.
