Gunsmoke was on for a record 20 seasons from 1955-1975. No other prime time drama lasted that long. Plus I bet Gunsmoke's ratings kill X-Files' or any show today. No cable, only the Big 3 networks. We'll never see ratings like that again. But advertizing has changed and just capturing a few million of the right demo is a success, Gunsmoke had only 2 other competitors instead of thousands. Gunsmoke has going to be cancelled in the late 60s but fans petitioned for it to come back.
