I've been watching some old 1970's shows lately and I've noticed that shippering just didn't seem to be of any importance back then as it is now. Today's writers seem to delight in using the "will they or won't they " concept in every show made, to manipulate their audience and keep people interested. As for me, I can't stand this. It turns me off.I was very disappointed to see recently that in Doc Martin, they called off Louisa's and Martin's wedding after many troubles to get them together. I'm disappointed that the British have taken to stooping that low when in the past they have remained above all that shippering crap. [with the exception of East enders, of course]Another example is Doctor Who with all the ridiculous romantic garbage they have introduced to it.

I recently have been watching Space 1999 and as a child I really wanted Tony and Maya to get together, but watching as an adult, I see that they already are together and there are many instances in almost every episode that shows this.[Missed it as a child] As for John and Helena, there is no hiding the fact that they are lovers. But the relationships of these pairs[and others in the show] do not control the direction of the entire show. The stories are the most important thing and although the relationships are often used to tell[often corny] stories, they do not drive the whole show.

The same can be said for Policewoman. [Oh, hail Angie and Earl]In one of the comentaries, Angie commented that she thought they had put in a later show in the S1 DVD set because she was amazed at how chummy Pepper and Bill were with eachother so early in the peace. But this is just another example of those shows not relying on the shippering to drive their show. Policewoman was a bloody good show and still is if you take away the horrible clothes and hair dos. [With the exception of Pepper's cool suits]There are alot of concepts in that show that today's political correctness would stamp out. I actually won't let my kids watch a couple of them because they are a bit disturbing. Of course, today we have all the blood and gore and CSI type stuff, but it's what you don't see in Policewoman, that makes the things you do see scary. As for the relationship, well as a kid I could not work it out.I think if that show was on today with the internet there would be alot of discussion on it. As a kid I always new that he wanted a relationship but she never. Because, I thought, of the way the job destroys relationships and families [like hers] But now as an adult I see that he really does love her. Quite alot and I want to see other seasons so I can put my adult eyes on them to see what else I can find out. But because they were so chummy and lovey dovey at the beginning and they stay that way......it has no bearing on the popularity of the show. It puts the relationship out of the equation [sp] and lets us all enjoy the drama.

Writers back then,I suppose, were not fighting as hard for ratings like they do now and with shippering, they have found the perfect tool to manipulate their audience and keep them hanging on for more, but quite frankly, I'm over it.I tend to turn off shows that do that now. I think it shows that writers/producers don't have faith in their characters and stories and what does it say for humans these days who have to live out their fantasies by shippering for couples on TV?
