Subject: "Eve" and "Born Again"

I recently rewatched the Season 1 eps "Eve" and "Born Again" and was struck by the differences and similarities in the two eps.

Both eps feature 8-year-old girls who are responsible -- to a greater or lesser degree -- for several deaths. The difference is the way the mother reacts to the idea of her daughter being a homicidal maniac.

In "Born Again" the mother is seeking help for her daughter from a psychaitrist and vehemently denies that her daughter could "really" be responsible for the deaths around her. Even when it becomes apparent that her daughter is somehow involves, the mother stands firm on protecting her daughter and the fact that, legally speaking, it's almost impossible to hold a child under the age of 10 responsible for a crime. They're generally assumed not to have the intelligence, life experience and moral understanding to truly understand the consquences of their actions.

Contrast that to the mother in "Eve". Mulder shows up and says, "Hey, your daughter and her separated-at-birth twin are a couple of homicidal maniacs. We know this because they killed the woman who kidnapped them and then tried to kill me and my partner." Does the mother demand any kind of proof?? Does she point out that killing the woman who was holding them hostage could regarded as self-defense?? Does she say, "Gosh, an 8-year-old child doesn't really understand the concept of 'killing' somebody. Maybe she just thought she'd make you and your partner sick or sleepy."

Um. . .no. She just lets them cart her daughter off to be locked up in an insane asylum!! The mother also makes a remark that the child she carried in her womb, gave birth to and nutured for years wasn't "really" her daughter because, genetically speaking, she wasn't related to her. You get the feeling from the mother's actions that the little girl's real "crime" wasn't killing or attempting to kill people; it was the fact that she wasn't genetically related to the mother. Once the mother knew there was no genetic connection between her and the child she'd regarded as her daughter, she was eager to completely wash her hands of the kid and forget she ever existed.

For my money, this makes the mother more of a "monster" than her homicidal eight-year-old!
