Scully's tattoo

Can someone tell me what exactly Scully's tattoo means? It is a snake eating it's tail is it not? I was just watching the Pretender [which is a great show by the way] and people on there had this exact same tattoo and it was said to be the symbol of cannibalism. So if this is the case, why did Scully get that particular one? Did she feel she was eaten up by her boring life? Or did she choose it because she felt she was going around in an infinite circle? I'm intrigued.
