I saw Gillian Anderson on Leno just before Requiem aired and I heard her say that they filmed two endings based on whether or not Duchovny was returning. I don't know much about her, but it seems odd that she'd lie. But THEN I read an interview with Chris Carter where HE said that there wasn't an alternate ending filmed. So WHO was lying? It's a mystery.

It seems from this thread that I'm not the only one who got spoiled. Sucks, doesn't it?
