Subject: Good news/bad news about various Fox shows

I'm posting this here as I thought it might be of interest. It's from the AP Entertainment Wire, but it's only this woman's educated guesses, not carved-in-stone fact. There was more to the article, I just included the shows that I know are of interest to some of us. Afterwards, I add some comments of my own.

Where will the Hollywood hatchet fall?

It’s tension time in Tinseltown, as producers wait to hear if their shows will be renewed for another season. The networks plan to announce their fall schedules next week, and a lot of series are ‘‘on the bubble,’’ as they say. Programmers will make their decisions based on ratings, potential ratings and internal politics.

‘‘Angel’’ on the WB could be lost now that ‘‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’’ is heading for UPN this fall. The show is already ratings-challenged (ranked 117th) and hasn’t generated any buzz this season. ‘‘Buffy’’ or no ‘‘Buffy,’’ ‘‘Angel’’ looks dead.
Ditto Fox’s ‘‘X-Files’’ spinoff, ‘‘The Lone Gunmen.’’ Fans of the original aren’t taken with the comedy spinoff, and newcomers don’t know what to make of the wacky conspiracy hunters. It’s ranked 110th, and Fox isn’t likely to renew. Sooner or later, creator Chris Carter will find another hit or realize that ‘‘The X-Files’’ is his one and only.

Of last fall’s newcomers, only CBS’s ‘‘C.S.I.’’ is a bona fide hit. CBS believes ‘‘The District’’ is catching fire Saturday nights. Fox has garnered acclaim and ratings for ‘‘Boston Public’’ and ‘‘Dark Angel,’’ while NBC believes it has a couple of winners in ‘‘Ed’’ and ‘‘Third Watch.’’

Well, the news about "TLG" is bad, but hardly unexpected. I think it's amazing that it's lasted the 10-12 weeks it has. Most shows with ratings like it's been showing would have been yanked off the schedule within six weeks. (I *LIKE* the show, in case it's sounding like I don't. But a lot of other shows I've liked over the years have been cancelled within six weeks, despite doing no worse than "TLG" has been doing.)

The news about "Dark Angel" seems to be good. It sounds like this TV critic believes it will be renewed, despite its relatively low ratings.

The good news *OR* bad news, depending on your feelings about a Mulderless/Scullylite ninth season of XF, is that it's not listed as being one of the "bubble" shows, so I guess we're definitely in for at least one more season.
