Subject: Forerunners of "The X-Files"

Here's something to stimulate discussion as we wait for the next season to begin. What TV shows of the 60s, 70s or 80s do you consider kind of "forerunners" to "The X-Files"? We all know Chris Carter himself has said he was heavily influenced by "The Night Stalker" back in the 1970s. A lot of people compare it to "The Twilight Zone" from the 1960s. There's been a fair amount of comparison to the 1980s TV show "Moonlighting" but, even though I liked "Moonlighting" I really don't see much similarity between the two shows. First of all, "Moonlighting" was primarily comedy while "XF", except for an occasional ep, is drama/Sci-Fi.
More importantly, from a shipper point of view, the relationship between Maddie and Dave was, IMHO, quite different from the Mulder/Scully relationship. Maddie and Dave basically had a love/hate relationship and delighted in putting each other down, despite their obvious sexual attraction to each other. The MSR is much more tender and supportive.
Did anybody ever see a short-lived American TV show of the late 1980s called "Probe"? To me, this show contained a lot of the same elements as "The X-Files". The main character was kind of a composite of Mulder and all three Lone Gunmen (i.e. he was good-looking, like Mulder, but a nutty computer wonk, like the Gunmen. He even lived/worked in the same place, a la the guys.) and there was a woman who worked for him and the two of them had kind of one of those "attracted to each other but not willing to admit it" relationships, like Mulder and Scully had for the first six seasons or so of "XF". Heavily computer-oriented eps of "XF" (like "Ghost in the Machine" from Season One or "Kill Switch" from Season Five) always bring back memories of "Probe".
On a somewhat related note: Does anybody remember how "Moonlighting" ended? I remember the much-talked-about ep where Maddie and Dave finally "did it", but I don't really remember what happened after that. Did they get married? Break up? Did the show have a big "series finale" ending episode or did it just end with everything up in the air?
