for Mulder just to be "gone" for at least the first eight eps, then make a dramatic return on the first Sunday in February. If he's only going to be in half the eps anyway, it would be easier to explain, storywise, why he's gone for three months in a row (the aliens and/or the Consortium have him) than to explain why he's there for a couple of weeks, gone for a couple of weeks, there for a couple of weeks, gone for a couple of weeks, etc.
After Mulder returns we could still have one or two eps that just had Skinner and/or the Lone Gunmen and/or Krycek and Marnita with neither Mulder nor Scully. (GA will undoubtedly be ready for a break by that point!) It could be left to our imagination where M&S were and what they were doing during the weeks neither one of them came to work!
BTW, will Mulder and Scully definitely be "involved" once he returns? From what I understood, showing more dimensions to Mulder's character was just as important to DD as the money in determining if he would return.
