in that these guys probably needed to go out with/date/ (or whatever) a number of women. In Mulder's case, it did not take too many dates or women to realize that Scully was the one for him, IMHO.

I think Mulder had a certain sense of loyalty and was always concerned about the people he met and worked with--especially when they seemed to be vulnerable. CSM was the only exception and considering the relationship there, I find his hatred ironic but most certainly defensible!
