Well, I caught "your" episode on the reruns last night, Det.
Rewatching it for the fifth or sixth time, I realized this is probably the episode that turned me from "a person who watches X-Files" to a full-blown, obsessive X-Phile!!
To give a little history: My brother was a XF fan since the Pilot ep, but my hubby and I didn't start watching XF 'til about midway through the fourth season. We both liked it but, ironically, given my continued presence on these boards and my status as one of the most prolific (not necessarily one of the best, just one of the most prolific) XF fanfic writers around, my husband was actually the one who was initially more intrigued by the series.
This was the year of the first *LONG* hiatus between the end of one season and the beginning of the next, so during the summer of 1997 we were able to catch up on most of seasons one and two (which were being rerun late on Saturday nights on our local FOX affiliate) and all of season four (which was being rerun in the show's normal Sunday night timeslot). I *liked* XF and I was eagerly looking forward to the beginning of season five, but I wasn't yet reading/writing fanfic, visiting mesage boards, etc.
The first few eps of season five (Redux/Redux II) were good, but kind of sad and while there was a lot of tenderness in Mulder's behavior toward Scully when she was in the hospital, it wasn't really the two of them going out and working *together* to solve a case. . .it was him working to save her life while she just kind of lay there in the hospital bed.
The along came "Detour" and I was just blown away!! It was everything I'd come to love about XF -- Mulder and Scully "alone together", the two of them in danger from a mysterious entity, some shippy innuendo, other agents not understanding what they were doing or why the were doing it -- perfect!
So this ep is responsible not only for making me an X-Phile, but for forcing me to learn some basic computer skills so that I could get on the internet and "talk" about XF, read XF fanfic, etc.
