Well, I watched both these episodes this evening. Neither is really among my very favorite from season six, but I wanted to watch "Ghosts" because it seemed appropriate for this time of year and my husband wanted to watch "SR" because he likes Skinner a lot and that ep is Skinner-centered.
Some thoughts, which are a mix of retreads from when I first saw the eps and new observations:
"Ghosts" is good, but more funny than scary. One thing that became clear watching the ep in retrospect is that Fowl Thing was never, in any way, a threat to the MSR. During late season six, and especially between seasons six and seven, there was a lot of discussion as to how Mulder was "torn" between Fowl and Scully. But if he had any feelings other than professional ones for Fowl, she would have been the more logical choice for him to invite for the evening of star-crossed lovers ghostbusting. . .they were former lovers and she shared his belief in the paranormal. We *know* she was in the Washington area at the time, because this was during the part of season six where Fowl and Jeff Spender were working the X-Files, but Mulder invited Scully instead because he knew she was his real "soulmate" despite the fact that they hadn't yet crossed the line to physical intimacy.
Another interesting thing about "Ghosts" was that it was probably the closest thing XF ever did to a "real time" episode. The whole episode at the haunted house, from teaser to penultimate scene, took place between 11 p.m. and midnight; I guess it was supposed to be a couple of hours later when Scully showed up at Mulder's apartment to exchange Christmas gifts, but that still means the whole ep took place within a three- or four-hour segment of time.
"SR 819" was really much better than I remembered. It brought up an interesting point. . .the only person *OFFICIALLY* connected to the X-Files during the entire time they were open was Skinner. M&S kept getting yanked off of them (plus they each had to take abduction leaves) but Skinner was always the AD in charge of the agents in that division. Also, I think this was the first ep where we got to see Kimberly (Skinner's secretary, played by Arlene Pileggi, Mitch's real-life wife) actually interact with somebody, rather than just saying something like "Agents Mulder and Scully are here to see you, sir". I wonder why she didn't go to the hospital to see Skinner, though? You'd think it would be a normal thing for a secretary to do if her boss was seriously ill.
