Subject: Dreamland I and II

I always forget what *REALLY* good eps the "Dreamlands" are. For some reason, when I think about these eps I mostly remember the funny scenes -- like Mulder/Morris doing the underwear dance in front of the mirror or Scully pulling a gun on the fake Mulder as he's trying to seduce her -- and forget that it goes to the very heart of what the X-Files is all about by raising questions about the nature of space, time, identity and memory.
One thing I wondered at the time -- and still wonder while watching it again -- is why it took Scully so long to accept that the man she was with wasn't the real Mulder?? After all, *twice* before she'd thought she was with Mulder only to have it be the Alien Bounty Hunter (season two) or Eddie Van Blunhdt (season four) and Morris was acting *very* unlike the real Mulder. . .so she should have caught on to what was going on a lot sooner than she did, especially as Mulder kept calling to tell her he wasn't himself! I suppose a possible explanation might be that, given Mulder's declaration of love the week before (at the end of "Triangle") and her own stated desire for a "normal life" during the teaser for this ep, that she WANTED to believe Mulder had decided to start doing things like following FBI rules and cooking dinner for her. . .and so it took her a while to admit that, much as she might want him to, her actual Mulder didn't do things like that.
It was interesting to see how much each man wanted his own life back. Mulder didn't even seemed momentarily tempted to stick around being a "man in black" no matter how much closer to "the truth" it might have lead him. . .he just wanted to get back to Scully!! Granted, Morris *was* tempted, but he eventually decided that he wanted his life with JoAnn and their kids back. Oddly enough, JoAnn herself didnt' seem tempted there at the end. . .and wouldn't you think she'd at least *consider* the possibilities of having her husband's personality and memories in conjunction with Mulder's body??
