I don't really think it took courage for Mulder to say that; I think it was the painkillers. I'm not saying that he didn't meant it, though. And if you look at what Scully had done in that episode for Mulder, all that she had gone through to find him, she had more than a little right to be kind of upset with him. In my opinion.

I'm trying to think of times that Scully has hurt Mulder, and I'm really having trouble. That's not to say she hasn't, I just have blinders on when it comes to her. One thing I can think of is when Scully told Mulder that they could drop him in the desert and tell him the truth is in there and he'd ask for "a shovel. Or maybe a back hoe." Then Mulder says, "Is that really what you think of me?" The scene switches gears really fast after that so we can't tell if Mulder was actually hurt, but it did seem kind of mean.
