What can I say? This is only my favorite XF ep of all time!! I loved having a chance to see Mulder and Scully being *happy* together. . .wrestling for ice cream, playing baseball. . . .all those fun things mean ol' CC didn't want them doing.
The story-within-the-story was also *extremely* well done. Being a shipper, I probably tend to spend more time analyzing the MSR moments of this ep, but the whole business about what it means to be human and how Exley finally achieved it was wonderful. Also, the mood of the 1940s was very well established. And I liked Mulder's interaction with "Arthur II". Since Mulder and Scully weren't, actually, in it all that much DD essentially wrote a mini-novel and bookended it with some MSR. Wonderful!!
