I agree they drove each other crazy at times but, IMHO, that kind of proves my point. . .wouldn't spending hours all day with a person you were sexually attracted to but were *not* doing the naked pretzel with make you a little crazy??
Mulder was very open about the fact that he *needed* Scully to balance him out. That was pretty much the gist of what he was telling her during the famous "hallway scene" in the movie. He'd had at least two relationships with women who agreed with him on all things paranormal (Phoebe and Fowl Thing) and obviously he found that unsatisfying, as the relationships didn't last. Scully was less open about exactly what it was she was getting out of her relationship with Mulder, but she must have felt she was getting *something* out of it. . .why else would she have hung around as long as she did?
