Subject: "Colony/End Game"

These two eps are my favorites among the ones that are completely contained within season two. (I like "Anasazi/Blessing Way/Paper Clip" even better, but that mytharc spans seasons two and three.) Having seen various members of the Scully clan in several diferent season one and two eps, it's nice to finally meet Mulder's family. And we get to meet the Alien Bounty Hunter, too. I think the "telephone tag" that M&S play throughout the second half of "Colony" is especially eerie because, while *what* Mulder has to tell Scully is weird, the basic concept -- needing to warn somebody about something and always missing them with your telephone calls -- is pretty realistic.
I think these eps really reinforce the mutual and loving nature of the MSR. In previous eps we've seen Scully rushing to save Mulder (most notably in "Little Green Men") or Mulder doing everything possible to save Scully (in both "Duane Barry/Ascension/One Breath" and in "Irresstible") but in these two eps they basically save each other. First Mulder trades the woman he believes to be his sister -- you know, the sister that he's spent the last *22* years of his life looking for! -- in order to save Scully (who, let's remember, has been his partner less than 22 *months* at this point); then Scully goes charging up to the Arctic to rescue Mulder. These eps are also notable for being the first ones in which Skinner gets out from behinds his desk and kicks butt (or, to be literal about it, butts head) in order to help Mulder and Scully.
