that when Mulder had that "conversation in the dark" he was definitely referring to his relationship with Scully. Wasn't his very next line something like "These seem to be the questions that you and I were born to ask"??
Yes, there was mention of Bill Mulder and CSM water skiing together, apparently at some point not long before Samantha disappeared. If I were Cassandra Spender, I wouldn't have been thrilled with my husband going off to water ski while he left me home. Even if she didn't want to water ski (or couldn't because she was pregnant at the time) I'd think she would go with him to his friends' beach house and socialize.
I still hold that the whole "affair between one of the Mulders and one of the Spenders" would have made a *LOT* more sense if the cheating spouses had been Cassandra and Bill, rather than CSM and Tina. Then we would have had a rationale, of sorts, for why CSM hated the Mulder family.
