Subject: Mind's Eye/Pine Bluff Variant/Folie a Deux

"Mind's Eye" is an okay ep. There's nothing I particularly dislike about it, but nothing that really grabs me, either. It seems a little lite on Scully involvement and there's virtually no discussion of the case between M&S. The X-File itself is the kind I would have liked to have seen more of over the years; flashes of telepathic communication between blood relatives, as was occurring between the father and blind daughter in this ep, is the kind of just-on-the-edge-of-believable phenomena that even a skeptic like Scully might concede is in the realm of possibility.
"The Pine Bluff Variant" is a really good ep that allows us to see Mulder in an unusual (for him) situation that is probably a lot closer to what real FBI agents do than his usual work on the X-Files. To a large extent, I think it answers the question that various people asked over the years "How did Mulder get away with all the crap he pulled without being fired?" To judge by this ep, the answer would appear to be: "Because he's a very good at what he does; brave, resourceful and able to cope with pressures that would break a lesser man." Also, let's face it, Mulder just looked extra-yummy throughout this ep, wearing all that black! It's one of the few eps that doesn't even have a hint of the supernatural or extra-terrestrial. There are two scenes I especially love: the one where Mulder comes home with a broken finger to find Scully in his apartment ("Scully, get out of here!" "It's okay, Mulder, Skinner told me everything.") and the final one where Mulder pulls up in front of the bank with the contaminated money, only to find out that Scully has figured it out first and was there before he was. Is that unspoken communication or what??
"Folie a Deux" isn't really a great episode, but it's a good one. It's also notable for having the greatest shipper line of all time: "You're my one in five billion". One of the odd things about it is that Mulder gets angry when he's asked to do a risk evaluation specifically because there are allegations of a "monster" roaming the company. In past eps, he's gotten angry when he's been given "routine" assignments that have no hint of anything unusual about them, so you have to wonder, just a bit, exactly what kind of assignments it is he wants.
