a father-son relationship between them. I know Skinner's not old enough to be Mulder's father (I think I read an "official" Skinner bio someplace that put his birth year as 1950, which would be about the right age to have served in Vietnam, and, of course, Mulder's is 10/13/61, so there's only an age difference of about 11 years between them)but it's that *type* of relationship. Mulder often does things that exasperate Skinner but, at other times, Skinner is very proud of him and Skinner will *always* defend him against "outsiders" who try to cause Mulder grief and pain.
So, basically, I think Skinner was trying to subdue him without hurting him. I'm sure Skinner *could* have been a lot more brutal, just took care not to.
