Before XF ever premiered, the early promos said something along the lines of "She's a scientist who believes every seemingly-irrational event has a rational explanation. He's a believer in UFOs and the paranormal. Together, they investigate cases that defy the usual parameters of FBI matters. Sometimes she's right. Sometimes he is."
My number two beef with XF over the years was the fact that they didn't have enough episodes where Scully was the one who was "right". As Mulder pointed out in "Field Trip", he was the one who was "right" about 95% of the time! I would have liked to have seen more cases where there really was a logical, rational explanation. They had, what, maybe eight eps in the first seven seasons where there was nothing paranormal or alien-related going on??
Stories about Mulder and Scully - whether the official, Chris Carter approved novelizations or fanfic - actually tend to do a better job in keeping to this original premise of Scully being right close to half the time. Most of the official novelizations begin with M&S wrapping up a case that involved their profiling and/or scientific skills before moving onto the heart of the story, which is a supernatural-type X-File case. A lot of fanfics tend to begin with the premise of the dynamic duo in some small town investigating an X-File that turns out to be a hoax, and then deciding that since there's nothing better to do, they should just make love for the next 18 pages.
P.S. I'm presuming all of you know me well enough by now to be able to figure out what my number *one* beef with this show was!!
