I think Mulder and Scully were kept in the dark about a lot of things because they were never meant to succeed in the X-Files.

I always thought the comments of the two doctors at Ice were a manifestation of their distrust in everything. They checked everyone's IDs, and they figured M&S knew more because they were with the government, the the government always knows more than they say they do.

We had a plenty lengthy discussion of Ice over on the Scully board. It's one of the episodes in our Scully marathon. You should come check it out!
