I guess what struck me is the contrast of this episode to the real-life Andrea Yates case. Andrea Yates murdered all *FIVE* of Rusty Yates' children, yet (for better or worse) he was very supportive of her during the trial; he was the main one who kept saying she shouldn't be held responsible, needed help not punishment, etc. . .despite the fact that he was the one whose children were killed.
I have a husband *and* children and I can't honestly say how I'd react if one of them killed the other(s). I guess I just feel an eight-year-old child who kills one family member due to mental illness deserves at least as much compassion as a 38-year-old women who kills five family members due to mental illness; actually probably deserves more.
