I think Mulder had a lot of respect in the early seasons, he was just perceived to be "wasting" his formidible talents by investigating the X-Files, rather than actually helping to catch serial killers by using his profiling skills. Remember, when Scully was first assigned to work with him, she was supposed to be bringing him back into the bureau mainstream.
One thing I *never* understood is why Blevins or Skinner or somebody didn't just say: "Hey, we're not paying you to investigate all this paranormal and extra-terrestrial crap. Get your ass back over to the Violent Crimes squad and profile some serial killers and sex offenders so we can get them off the streets and in prison where they belong." (Well, other than the really *OBVIOUS* reason that, if they'd done that, we wouldn't have had a show to watch!!) Still, I always thought it was dumb that, when they *did* close down the X-Files (in seasons two and six) they had Mulder doing stupid stuff like wiretaps and fertlizer purchase investigations, rather than putting him back on violent crimes to do profiling.
Don't worry about the pictures. I like this one. And I'm sure it must be time-consuming to change them.
