This was a good episode; scary in an unusual kind of way and with a "monster" that really straddled the line between "higlyy improbably but scientifically possible" and "complete science fiction".
I also liked how Scully chewed Mulder out for making a decision that would effect all of them without consulting her first. If she ever thought of him as her superior (whether or not Mulder was, in any way, Scully's "boss" is one of those questions that was never really answered on XF; in the Pilot ep she said she'd been sent to "assist" him and, at various times, he was referred to as the head of the X-Files division)she obviously felt they'd achieved equal partner status by this ep.
A couple of minor points:
Wasn't this the episode that got some sort of award from environmentalist groups? That seems odd, considering that the environmentalists in this ep were portrayed as extreme wackos who valued trees more than human life. (The environmentalists hadn't *directly* killed the loggers, but they'd disabled their trucks and radio, making it impossible for the loggers to escape or call for help, thus contributing to their deaths.)
I got a kick out of Mulder describing the missing loggers as "manly men". Wasn't that the phrase used years later to describe Doggy when he joined the cast?
