Well, this is definitely one of the all-time classic eps and it still holds up almost ten years after it originally aired! I'll try not to go over too much of the same ground that's already been covered, but rather attempt to mention some new insights that came to me during this viewing.
1.) A *LOT* has been discussed about the "car scene" from this episode and it shows up in many a fanfic (i.e. why the hell is Scully the only female on the planet who can't call him "Fox"?? And the great "If there's an iced tea in that bag, this might be true love"/"Must be fate. . .it's root beer" conversation) but to me the truly intimate, and often overlooked, detail of this scene is when Mulder hands Scully a sandwich that he's already taken a bite out of and tells her she may want it later and she accepts it. Eating something someone else has already bitten into is a pretty "intimate" (although non-sexual) thing to do. . .I'll eat after my kids or my husband, but I don't eat after my co-workers, no matter how fond of them I may be!
2.) I really liked the old sheriff. I wish he'd become a recurring character. The scene where Scully is using all kinds of scientific methods to decide where they should dig for the body and the old guy just wheels his wheelchair to exact right spot and says "Dig here" tickles me no end. It reminds me of a scene from one of my favorite movies, "Waltz Across Texas". (In the movie a college-educated geologist uses a computer program to tell her where to dig for oil. . .only to show up at the spot and find out a wildcatter has already staked out the spot by instinct.)
3.) I liked the line at the end where Mulder says "Change is coming for us" to Scully. I think this is the first time he acknowledged that the X-Files were something they were *both* involved with, not just his own private fiefdom.
