This is one of those early eps that doesn't get mentioned much and which, in fact, I barely remembered from my original viewing of it. But it actually turned out to be quite good!
Mulder and Scully were both completely in character and in full believer/skeptic mode. We also saw Mulder (for the first time, I think) do the field report, giving us a little more insight into his thought process. One thing I enjoyed -- and this is one of the few times I remember this happening -- was Scully pointing out that she and Mulder were supposed to building a case; whether or not Mulder could convince *her* to believe was kind of irrelevent . . . unless they had evidence they could present to a grand jury, it didn't matter.
I also really liked the portyal of the other women in this ep. For one thing, the local policewoman who called them in on the case was *not* trying to jump Mulder's bones throughtout the whole episode; she seemed interested in his professional opinion, only, and actually spent more time talking with Scully. And Michelle Bishop's mother was a *much* more sympathetic character than Tina Rearodon's mother (from "Eve") both cases involved young girls accused of committing murder; Michelle's mother expressed sorrow and frustration at her daughter's actions, but was mostly concerned that the child got help.
