It's not that I don't think Mulder believes what he says. I'm sure that he believes that Scully is his one in five billion, or whatever. What bothers me is that he blatently uses it to get what he wants from her. Perhaps the hallway scene is stretching it, but I believe the one in five billion scene was shot to show Mulder's manipulation of Scully.

As far as being selfish, I think everyone would agree that when you really, truly love someone, yourself is the last thing you think of. Not the case with Mulder.
