I'm sorry I brought it up ;)

I try not to bash Mulder very often because, among other reasons, people love him. And he has many redeeming qualities. And he certainly is pretty. And yes, even I admit that he loves Scully. There! I said it. But so what?

When I think of Mulder I think of someone who is so blinded by his own quest that he never thinks of anything or anyone else. He is manipulative and selfish.

I've been on an XF kick lately, and have watched several episodes lately. Most recently, I re-watched The Truth. It's the first time I've seen it since May. Now, words cannot describe how much I was looking forward to seeing Mulder/Duchovny in the finale. The show was based around Mulder's quest, and it was important that he was there. Plus, I missed the guy. He gets there and Scully is so, so happy to see him, but he doesn't even seem to care if he lives or dies. Scully begs him to plead guilty to a lesser sentence in an attempt to stay alive. He says he'd rather die than compromise the truth. Um, selfish much Mulder? Scully has been alone for a year trying to raise a baby, missing the hell out of Mulder and when they are finally reunited he tells her he'd rather die than be with her if he can't prove the truth? Mulder, could you please think of someone other than yourself for five freaking minutes? Could you even begin to imagine what will happen to Scully if she not only had to give up her baby but then you die and leave her completely and utterly alone?

Then, the prison break. Mulder and Scully are finally together outside of a prison cell and they're told to run to Canada to save themselves. But does Mulder do that? Of course not. He has to put himself and Scully in further danger by driving to see the CSM to see if there is anything he can do to stop the inevitable. In the process they are almost killed.

For most of my rewatching of The Truth, I wanted to slap Mulder upside the head and say, "Here is the real truth, mister. This woman loves you and has been through emotional hell since you've been gone. The most important thing is that you find out a way to be with her and comfort her. Stuff this alien b.s. and figure out how to get out of prison so you can take care of your woman."

I personally don't think that Mulder ever manipulated Scully into staying on The X-Files. Like you said, it was her job at first, but she had plenty of opportunity to leave. Scully never wanted to leave the X-Files, so Mulder never needed to try and get her to stay. Plus, in the most stripped down version of the show (where their relationship isn't considered) it probably would have been beneficial for Mulder if Scully didn't stay on the X-Files.

Shwew. I hope I didn't sound too obnoxious just then. For the most part I do like Mulder, I just think that he needs a lesson in being selfless.
