Since this is the "Seasons 1-7" board, I thought we'd better put a warning on these, in case anybody came by who hasn't watched "The Truth" yet and didn't want to be spoiled.
Actually, SMH, as much as I love Mulder I don't totally disagree with all you've said. I will, however, make several points.
1.) Personally, I discount virtually everything both Mulder *AND* Scully did after "Requiem" as being totally out-of-character for the M&S we'd grown to love during seasons 1-7. (Scully giving William up for adoption would fit in here.) I realize not everyone will agree with this, but I also know I'm not the only one who feels this way. I watched "The Truth" once and probably won't ever watch it again. So I'm really not going to comment much on that part of it.
2.) Umm. . .yeah, Mulder did have a kind of monomanical obsession with the truth and/or Samantha's abduction. That was his "flaw" and it was what made him a tragic hero in the classic meaning of the word. But I do think he could and would put Scully first when he really had to. The classic example of this was in "Redux" when CSM offered Mulder "what he most wanted in the world" and Mulder replied "The cure to Scully's cancer?" CSM seemed to think that what Mulder most wanted was reunion with Samantha but, at least at that moment in time, when Scully was so sick, saving her was more important to him than finding his sister.
3.) Really, the only reason it made sense for Mulder to want Scully to stay around was because he'd fallen in love with her. As you very accurately point out, from a purely professional pov, he was probably better off without her; she was always discounting his theories, shooting down his ideas and stuff. They alluded to this as early as season two, when they were separated and Scully called him and asked if it wasn't wonderful for him to be partnered with someone who wasn't constantly questioning his every move. Mulder replied "Yeah, it's great" but it was very obvious from his tone of voice, facial expression, etc. that he was *LONGING* for Scully.
