I can believe that Mulder was prepared to give Krycek a chance but maybe he shouldn't have been so trusting of him when they were on their journey. At the point of the action depicted in this photo, the reason I found it so exciting (as someone who loves this K & M relationship) was that Mulder and he were on an equal footing. They were both after the same thing for once and I really think Mulder was carried away on this feeling. It seemed in some way that Mulder had been desperate for a strong male ally and he latched onto Krycek on this occasion.
And maybe there is a residue of this feeling in TRATB - a sort of fatal flaw in Mulder which means he can be blinkered when it comes to Krycek. And this is the basis of why I think it has been played in some way like a lovers' relationship. I know a lot of people disagree and it was never overt and you could argue against it, but I think NL and DD somehow added a flavour of a bond between them which made their interactions all the more fascinating.
And going back to when Krycek first appeared - Mulder began by mistrusting him and then ended up trusting him as an FBI partner so it seems this is repeating behaviour where Mulder and Ratboy are concerned!
