Subject: The BBC has the schedule all messed up!
In reply to: devlin 's message, "Milagro review" on 09:44:40 07/16/00 Sun

What are they doing?! I was over at Fox and someone posted that Milagro was going to be on the BBC for Saturday and I went, "Milagro!?!!"

There was a schedule change with Arcadia. It was filmed first and should have aired after One Son (there's a line in it that tells you it's their first case after getting THe X-Files back), but they had some post production problems with the special effects and it was delayed. So while it should have been One Son then Arcadia then Agua Mala then Monday, here in the US it was aired in this order: One Son, Agua Mala, Monday, Arcadia. It didn't make that big of a difference. We could even say that Agua Mala and Monday weren't really XF cases they were assigned to but just things they did on their own so Arcadia being the first since being put back on the files could still fit.

But Milagro!?? WHhy did you get that now? IS the BBC some big fan of illiteration so they wanted to put the M episodes together and then put the A ones together later (There are three eps that start with A)?

I think of Milagro as being one of the last few eps of the season, in the final batch of eps. Here's the order you should have gotten it in: After One Son you get Agua Mala then Monday then Arcadia then Alpha then Trevor and THEN Milagro! So when you talk about Scully and new feelings for Mulder at this stage, you're really not supposed to be there yet. Maybe you can view this one again in it's proper place after Trevor.

Well on with the episode. This was a very popular favorite of the season by the majority of fans. It came after a few mediocre eps or even ones that were considered bad. (Some of which you haven't seen yet ;-) ) so this worked as a big breath of fresh air.

I can see it being rather shippy but that's not the only reason for liking it. I thought it was a good story and ones of those psychological thriller style eps that we hadn't had in a long time. I thought Padgett was the most interesting creepy guy we'd had since John Lee Roche and the guy who played him whose name escapes me now did a great job. A couple things of interest to note: This actor, John Hawkes, (I just remembered his name!) tried out for rhe lead guest actor in Trevor (which you'll see soon) but didn't get the part and was very disappointed. He was so sure he would. It turned out to be a good thing, this was a much better role. Other note of interest, one of his good friends is Doug Hutchison alias Eugene Tooms. Can you see Tooms and Padgett palling around together? What a pair! I can't remember but Hawkes may have audtioned for Tooms too. I think there was another XF part he tried out for but got turned down because he wouldn't shave his beard. Seems like he found just the right role in Padgett.

One of the best scenes I think was in the church when he's telling Scully all about herself. How creepy is that!? And GA was brilliant here the way she started crying so subtely and was getting more angry at him with each word he said.

It was fun to see Mulder jealous! I loved him snooping through Padgett's mail! And a great scene with him and Padgett eyeing each other in the elevator. Mulder looked like he wanted to smack him one right there! Do you agree he was jealous? Because it's been said he was just being overprotective.

Lots of comments were made about Mulder brushing his teeth and then taking a sip of coffee without even spiting out the toothpaste which I guess is an awful combination. I don't drink coffee so I don't know. It was fun seeing casual Mulder and Scully conferring on a case though early in the morning. And I love seing more scenes in Mulder's apartment. :-o) I really like the look of it. It would be a fun place to hang out!

The a priore scene was great too with Mulder really being unsure about Scully and her behavior. I wonder how he felt reading a manscript all about his partner getting it on with "The Stranger"? And how did Scully feel knowing what Mulder had read? Kind of a wierd twist on voyeurism between the two of them. This episode has also yielded a new popular catch phrase which philes are using quite a bit in posts: "Naked Pretzel".

We get yet another appearance from Angelo Vacco the famous XF production assistant who's been in several eps. Here he looked kind of ridiculous though playing a 16 year old! I think he's getting a little long in the tooth for that!

Why is Scully always attracted to these psycho guys? And, as someone else pointed out, why do they always have incinerators in their apartment buildings? Interesting getting Padgett analyzing Scully. And of case the favorite line of the epsiode is the "Agent Scully is already in love." Definitely this line brought major fanfare from shippers all over! I rather liked it too! It really made me happy to hear it. But who'd have thought confirmation of such a thing would come from a guy who writes about ripping people's hearts out--literally!
Hooray for Padgett!

It's also been stated that Padgett was an alter ego for fanfiction writers in the XF fan world and Carter was taking stabs at them with this. Some of the writing did seem to have that air to it.

The writers of the ep (Carter, Spotnitz and Shiban) have also admitted that they are all in love with Scully so this was kind of a fantasy ep for them. Which is a bit creepy in itself! One thing i don't know if I like is the fact that Scully is protrayed as so vulnerable and being so easily taken in as well as being drawn to by this type of guy here and in Never Again. No wonder she and Mulder haven't gotten together. He's too nice and normal for her tastes apparently!

I think the killer was stopped by the script being tossed in the incinerator by Pdgett wasn't he? He was controlling the story and when his creation told him he had to kill Scully he fought against that in the end and helped save her. I think! I haven't watched this in awhile and don't remember the exact chain of events in that last scene. But there was blood all over Scully so are we supposed to assume he did cut through the skin and was about to yank her heart out?

I was puzzled by the teaser with Padgett taking his own heart out. Did he really do it and does he spend the rest of the ep 'heartless' or is it just a dream he's having?

I thought this was a good solid ep and I loved it for it's sheer creepyness above anything else. I had really wanting something that would disturb me in a good way and finally got it with this ep. One of my favorites of the season. I'm sorry you saw it a bit prematurely! Stupid BBC! :-(
