Hi Devlin,

I'm glad ypou gave The Unnatural an extra good looksee before your final judgement. You were probably thinking, "Uh oh. If I don't like this one everyone will pounce on me!" Like CW I adored this episode. I was really disappointed to read a thread over at Fox from people (I assume at least some were other BBC viewers) saying they only liked the M&S bits at the beginning and end and didn't like the rest. I loved the whole thing and really still would think it was great even without those scenes. The whole baseball thing did add to it for those of us who grew up with the game (did I ever tell you my mother is the world's biggest basball fan, bar none?) And seeing the field where Exley played was a great blast from the past to my softball playing days! I didn't play there but most amateur baseball diamonds look pretty much alike!

To add to Islandgirl's McGyver trivia bit, you know the baseball announcer you hear on the TV in the M&S offfice scene in the beginning and also on the TV on the bus (I think he's advertsing a bus line)? Well that announcer is the one and only Vin Scully, Scully's namesake. The guy CC referred to as "the voice of God". He really is the best known sports announcer. I had the opportunity of meting him accidentally in a supermrket not too long ago. I red just recently that they recorded his bits for this ep from his broadcast booth and he did it for free. Anyway that's the voice you've heard about! And he does have red hair!

Good insight on the themes in the ep. I thought DD did a really great job with many ideas woven into his story and its amazing to think that he claims to have written the whole ep very qwickly. I guess that shows he does think about his character and Scully more than he might like to admit!

I don't think you're reading too much into anything! After all, once someone learns the basics of how to bat they can easily take a few swings on their own and yet neither Mulder nor Scully seemed in any hurry to break loose from that clinch! And Mulder, I'm sure, devised this whole birthday gift with the idea of some close contact in mind! He sure gives good presents! :-)

I think Dales hinted to the fact that this story may not be true didn't he? It was funny the way he couldn't get Mulder to understand what he was really trying to say which is that it really isn't about baseball at all but anything a person feels passionate about. Baseball for one can be something else for another.

And Dales makes quite a claim saying all those famous ballplayers are really aliens! LOL

I thought Jesse L. Martin was wonderful. And I had the opposite reaction about is alien portrayal. I did think he kind of moved awkwardly as if he was something other than human. But as CW said, the Bounty Hunter walked poretty normal too. I think the Grays have to be very good at disquising thmselves from the earthlings.

Did you recognize DD's brother Daniel in this? And what did you think of the other Arthur Dales? I don't know if you read any of the background info on this, but they had already shot most of the ep when Darrin McGavin became very ill so they had to recast Dales and DD had to rewrite the Dales scenes. Poor DD was under a lot of pressure as a first time director! We also had rain here in So. Cal and shooting for his ep was delayed a couple days!

I really liked DD's writing style in this, especially Mulder's scenes with Dales. And I loved his new approach to the Mulder-Scully relationship. It was nice to see them having fun for a change!
And I thought the realtionship he created betwen young Arthur and Exley was really touching and well drawn. DD's really good at writing this relationship stuff!
