Subject: My appreciation was touch and go there, for a while

I agree that this episode was much more than just M & S bookends for a dull story. It had lots of themes and it addressed a lot of questions, and it was very cleverly woven together. In the recommended way, DD chose a subject he knew something about about, for his story. This made sure it was infused with 'the love of the game' and very ably got across the idea of passion in one's life (as you suggested).

I wondered if there was a problem with Darren McGavin, because the strange use of a brother with the same name was a bit odd. Why not have a brother with a different name? Or are we just supposed to see the joke and then insert Dales 2 into Dales 1 and see them as fulfilling the same role. I thought it worked OK. Amusing, actually.

"I've met Arthur Dales, and you're not him"

I didn't mention the dialogue in my first review but I did think the script - especially Mulder's own lines - were spot on. How must it have felt after all those years to invent not only snippets of ad-libbed Mulder dialogue, but to be responsible for everything he said and how everyone else replied. What a marvellous opportunity to take control of the psyche.

The first scene when Scully had her weird quasi ice-cream, was more notable for Scully laughing than anything else! When was the last time she giggled? And I liked how they tussled over the ice. It was playful and silly and *just* the kind of thing that real friends do, especially man-woman friendships! A bit of suggestive wrestling, there...

I liked Jesse L Martin too. (I last saw him as Ally McBeal's boyfriend, playing a doctor). If we take this as possibly being a true event, then 'Exley' represents the first obviously friendly alien we've seen, with the exception of Jeremiah Smith. Could he be said to *be* friendly?

I wasn't aware of Daniel Duchovny the first time around, but when the end credits came up I realised. I wonder if Daniel has expressed an interest in acting. Funny, because I never think of DD as having siblings. He seems more like an only child in outlook, IMO. What do you think?

Thanks for the tip off re Vin Scully. I didn't know his voice although I had read how Scully's character was named after him. We did get 'MacGyver' here at one point. Ages ago now. I watch Richard Dean Anderson in Stargate SG1 and I quite like him.
