Subject: The Field Where I Got Slimed

Field Trip

This was a good episode! I was very taken with the idea of layered realities. There seemed to be a bit of tension between our heroes at the outset, with Scully being all protective of her standpoint. I think when Scully began her protestations, she was being fairly light-hearted. "Have you ever thought of taking up the most obvious explanation, for the novelty of it.." Mulder, though, must have been feeling defensive, for some reason. His reply was not at all light-hearted - indeed, he seemed quite irritated at the suggestion she made. I felt for him really, and he is probably correct about how often he is right. Perhaps he over-reacted a little, but in principle, I agree with him.

But all that was turned around as the episode progressed and Scully was the one who began to see things as Mulder would have seen them. I liked how she shouted at Skinner and The Lone Gunmen at 'Mulder's wake' . There was something quite different about the Mulder that answered the door when Scully came round. He spoke quietly and movingly yet he seemed to not be very aware of the strangeness of his situation. I think it was interesting to see how in this hallucination Mulder needed Scully to see his abductee. Their scene in his bedroom, when Scully saw the alien was really memorable and, even though it had an air of unreality about it, even first time round, I'd like to think this is how wonderful such a scene would be if something like it were to happen in 'real life'.

Throughout, there are clues about the unreal situation - I was surprised to hear Mulder feeding lines to the Schiffs, the very thing which elicits positive responses when people experience false memory syndrome. Then, when the police lab guy spouted back Scully's words about ritual murder, just as she herself had described them, this proved that the scene was the product of information in Scully's head.

This technique worked well and I thought the XF was both scary and plausible. I did enjoy the false ending though. That might have been predicted really, because if you have false reality, you're always going to be wondering if you have got back to the true reality.

Field Trip gets my vote!

(PS I thought this was very well photographed and in both interiors and exteriors Mulder and Scully looked great.)
