I think when an ep falls down in so many ways - we have all given examples of the bad plotting and writing - then it isn't really easy to give logical explanations. I'm prepared to do a complete about face on this one - just for the hell of it : Scully, you should have gone outside to help Mulder or you could at least have tried to get him to speak to you on the other side of the door! How's that?

Yes, my interpretation of Dales' comment was that he was trying to be ultra charming to Scully, seeing as he'd been uncharitable at the outset. It may have been a reference to the fact that her *neglect* had helped save Mulder. It could even have been sarcastic, if Mulder had told him the tale... None of it hangs together very well and I can see why the ep got such a drubbing by fans.
