The name 'Jackie Robinson' is familiar to me but if I were asked a question in a quiz, I might have failed to recognise the sport. It is very interesting to think how I might have heard of who I have heard of, baseball-wise. Lou Gherig is not someone on the list, unfortunately. You will have to take me a baseball match and introduce me to the culture!

That is funny, you recently coming across the use of the word 'yankee' as a generic term. Actually - we are more likely to use the term 'yanks'. In this country, 'Yanks' were associated with GI's that we were posted here in the 2nd WW. It really hasn't got a throw back to the Civil War for us; it refers (incorrectly) to all USA citizens. Since then, the terms 'yanks' or 'yankees' has become a descriptive term for all people from the USA. And it is *not* very derogatory. We like you in the main... :-)
