I knew it would come to this..! And there I was, about to say it wasn't like Giant Rounders after all. Now I'm back where I started. ;-)

I don't think you are right about the yanking thing. At least, I have never heard such a thing. It really was to do with the term 'yankee' and the side of the country we knew most about. The East. It arose from jealousy that the US soldiers who were based here seemed larger than life and came armed with seemingly never ending supplies. Their never before experienced ways of talking and acting, somewhat over-confident next to the stiff upper lip squaddies also attracted the women. This irritated the British men (and more straitlaced women) so they started being called the Yankees. A bit of a putdown but based, I'm sure on envy, to a large degree...
