Perhaps I might be able to offer up a little insight, seeing as how I'm from one of the thirteen original colonies ;-P

Southerners do still call Northerners Yankees from time to time, but it seems these days it's mostly in jest. I've never actually heard a Southerner say something like "Those damn Yankees and their high tarriffs!" Which is I'm sure how it was used back in the day.

As far as the confederate flag being flown in southern states, I believe most southerners really do believe it's a part of their heritage. The Civil War only became about slavery after the war. It was really about preserving a way of life in the south. That way of life did include slaves, to be sure, but that's not the sole reason why they fought.

I live in a state that doesn't have a clear north/south boundary, so I'm surrounded by different opinions on all sides about the confederate flag. When you see skinheads driving around with it in the back of their trucks or tatooed on their legs right about their combat boots with red laces, it's not about heritage, that's true. But when it's flown over the capital building in the first state to secede from the Union over principles they still believe in, such as states rights, it gets a little blurry.
