It is sad when people use confederate or Nazi flags to express their hatred. And even though I believe the confederate flag, at least, can be be used to express heritage, I've tried to imagine myself as a black person in the United States and how I would feel if I had to look at a Confederate flag flying over the state's capitol building. A flag that, even though it's heritage, still is the heritage that had my ancestors being slaves.

I encounter lots of people up here who, when faced with the South of the time of the Civil War think that southerners were these harsh terrible slave owners, when that is really not the case. Only about a 25% of people in the Confederacy even owned slaves, and most of them didn't even fight in the Civil War because they were rich and bought people to fight for them. The Southerners back then certainly can't be judged badly for having slaves, because it was the way of life. First thing you learn in a history research class is not to judge the past by the present's standards.

Listen to me go on and on. That's what happens to me whenever I get started on history. Just wait until the end of this year when I actually have the piece of paper telling me I have a history degree. *Then* I'll really know everything!

SMH
