Subject: Why I didn't like Season 5 as much
In reply to: Scully'sMyHero 's message, "You thought S6 was better than S5?" on 07:59:13 09/01/00 Fri

It had two episodes I hated: Schizogeny and Kitsunagari. I felt more passionate dislike toward those than any in Season 6.

There were also several other I wasn't crazy about: Chinga, Kilswitch and Travelers.

I guess others liked Pine Bluff and Folie a Deux a lot but I just thought they were ok. Not great. Folie was better than Pine Bluff.

There were some good episodes. The Season was especially strong in the beginning with the first seven being great! I thought it got off to a really strong start.

But you know what the real trouble was I had with Season 5? Mulder and Scully. They spent way too much time apart and when they were together they just weren't clicking. The chemistry seemed off to me in several eps. I think there may have been some behind the scenes strain (rumors of GA and TL not getting along, DD wanting to leave Vancouver, his new marriage disracting him, that blasted ring he wore onscreen! Argh!) I'm just specualating here but I saw a difference caused by *something*, not sure what, on screen. Plus the fact that DD and GA were probably exhausted because of all the double duty in doing work on the movie (which is why they were apart so much--I think they had to do lot of additional finishing touches on the movie in between filming the series, didn't they?). Plus they had to shoot a movie in between two seasons which meant no break from the show so I'm sure that may have affected things.

I kind of resented the movie in general simply because I perceived it to have put a strain on the Mulder Scully relationship in the series. Maybe I'm imagining some of it because of all the negative press I read at the time. But my observations were that I sensed some tension between the actors (as opposed to the good kind of UST between M&S that we like!). The M&S magic wasn't as prevelant or consistant throughout the season and their chemistry is the most important aspect of the show for me. (I'm not talking shippy here at all, btw.)

Also, I thought Season 5 just seemed kind of tired. It had some great moments to be sure and I certainly don't hate it. But in comparison, its my least favorite season of the series.

Even though Season 6 had some weird epsiodes and maybe went a bit overboard with the goofyness factor, it did have some very fresh ideas (even if they didn't all work) and Mulder and Scully seemed to be back on track to me and DD and GA seemed more at ease with each other and the work situation.

JMO! ;-)
