I didn't start watching TXF until Season Five, so maybe I look back on it with a certain fondness that I wouldn't have if I'd been watching since Season One.

Now having watched all the seasons (thank heavens for FX), I see that Mulder and Scully's relationship on screen was different in S5, though I don't necessarily see it as bad. If anything, they were going through a rough patch and the tension, whether caused by behind the scenes events or not, seems to fit in, at least to me.

Maybe I'd feel differently if I had seen Season Four before I saw Season Five. S4 was so emotionally charged throughout the entire season that S5 would seem like a letdown. But if Mulder and Scully's relationship were actually real, they'd have to get irritated with each other a bit and just not have that constant 'clicking' that we'd all like to see. I mean, not that they'd fight, since they never did, just not be as in tune with each other. And S5 seems like the perfect place for that. Scully's cancer is in remission, so suddenly there is a lot less immediacy in their relationship. Plus they go through that whole time when they sort of flip flop opinions, when Mulder stops believing in aliens. A lot of sudden changes.

S6 was sort of weird to me. S5 seemed very serious to me. I think Bad Blood, Unusual Suspects, and Post Modern Prometheus (which I hated) were really the only light hearted episodes in the bunch, the S6 bombarded us with them. And really, how pathetic does Rain King look in comparison to Bad Blood?

I don't know anything about the behind the scenes stuff going on at the time of the filming, mostly because I was so new to watching and wasn't yet online. Even now I try to ignore the behind the scenes stuff because I think it taints the shows somewhat. That apparantly happened with you in S5.

I think the only episodes I really didn't like in S5 was PMP, Travelers, and Schizogeny. That stupid tree episode had to be one of the worst ever. But I am in the group that really like Pine Bluff and Folie a Deux, and I also really liked Chinga. Maybe it was just because we got to see Scully in jeans and a convertible, I don't know. I didn't really have an opinion on Kitsunegari until later when I saw Pusher and saw how they butchered such a good story line.

All this talk is making me even more anxious for S8 (sorry BBC-ites!). I saw the promo last night! Very exciting.
