Subject: Anasazi - and a point to make to Melissa
In reply to: Islandgirl 's message, "The ending of" on 09:08:23 10/19/00 Thu

No, I wasn't afraid for Mulder. We never even saw him 'dead'. The last thing we saw on 'Anasazi' was CSM saying "Burn it!" and the traincar being set on fire. We might have suspected Mulder somehow survived his fate. It was so early on in the series' life, that I didn't consider the worst.

But is Melissa perhaps getting mixed up with her episodes? The episode when Scully identified Mulder's body was Gethsemane/Redux (end of S4, beginning of S5) and she was in no doubt then that Mulder was still alive, because Mulder asked her to lie for him. The only point of the story when the viewer might have been afraid for Mulder was the first time we saw Scully give her tearful evidence to the special committee. The second time we saw this scene, we knew the back story and that Scully was lying to protect Mulder. Very moving.

So, I think, Islandgirl that the Gethsemane moment might have been a more likely point for viewers to fear the character's true death. Mulder was at a very low ebb emotionally at that point.... plus the series was four years old by then so the contractual difficulties you mentioned could well have started to arise. Your question was an interesting one. :-)
