Tithonus... I've thought long and hard about this ep. I've read reviews on the web, thought about what other people said, but still I feel like I'm no closer to forming an opinion about it. It has left me confused... Not so much because I don't understand what's going on, because I think I do, but because I can't decide wheter it was good or bad, whether I liked it or not.

I did enjoy watching it again though. For a moment I even thought watching it a second (or third?) time would clear things up, but that was yesterday... Today, all I can say is that it's OK, and better than most S6 eps so far.

There are many good things to say about this ep., many things I liked. First of all, the teaser, I thought it was excellent. It's best when you see this without any prior knowledge of the ep. Like that woman, you're in that corridor, wondering what that stranger wants, why is he following her around? The corridors, so long, so empty, make this scene all the more creepy. She's on her own, no one's there to help her. She starts running. You're muscles tense, like you want to start running too. When the woman enters the elevator, thinks she's safe, you just know she's not. Still, you don't know what exactly is going on. Then, all of a sudden it becomes clear... The elevator is going to crash! When the elevator's doors open, and the blood comes out, and the hand... it's absolutely chilling!!

Another thing I loved, the scene at the office: M&S doing background checks. It's hard for me to explain why I like this scene so much, but it definitely brought a smile to my face. It's scenes like this, showing a normal every-day work situation that add a little something extra to the ep, perhaps making it more believeable.

I liked the fact that this was a Scully-centered ep. It's always good to see her do some investigating 'on her own'. I loved the phone calls, Mulder's noseyness, and Scully's attitude toward Peyton Ritter. Scully's commitment to finding out the truth, to being honest, reminded me of her attitude toward Tom Colton in Squeeze. In fact, I thought Ritter's character had much similarities to Colton's. Also, it struck me that Scully is really that different from Mulder when it comes to her commitment to finding the truth. She doesn't really think about the consequences of her actions, about whether or not she'll be spoiling her chances to get more interesting work. She doesn't seem to care that she'll probably be doing background checks for the rest of her life if she fails to please Kersh.

Scully's little trip with Felig also is something you'd expect Mulder to do. Although, Scully continues to play her role of the sceptic, there's plenty of evidence that her years as Mulder's partner have changed her, made her more 'unconventional'. Would she have acted the same had she been Ritter's partner for the last 6 years? I don't think so.

The plot... As I've said before there are many things I like about this ep. I've named just a few. There are many more. But... what I'm not so sure about is the plot. I think the whole notion of gaining immortality by looking away from Death, or closing your eyes is unconvincing at best. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of an immortal man chasing 'Death' in the hope he'll be noticed and granted his greatest wish, to die, and rest in peace. It's the explanation of how Felig came to be immortal, and how he finally manages to die and (possibly) pass on this immortality, that I don't like.

There's much more to say about this ep, but I'll leave it at this for now. I hope you'll all join in, and we can have a great discussion about this ep.

Mat B-)
