Subject: Two Fathers (and One Son!)

The words that are coming to mind are superlatives, like fantastic, brilliant, wonderful – because it was all those things. We saw Two Fathers and One Son as a feature length episode on Saturday and boy, did it deliver! From the word go, I knew we were in for a major revelatory episode; the scary recap of almost all that had gone before, the inclusion of all the characters - *everyone* was in it! – the whole thing was set up to unravel some of the confusion that had gone before. Something to get your teeth into.

So, Spender’s out of it. Was I alone in feeling a bit sorry for Spender? He started out feeling resentful of his father, but seemed to have responded to the ideas about the Syndicate etc. But CSM turned against him, when he decided his son didn’t have the mettle for the task. He wished Mulder to have been the son and he said Spender “paled to Mulder”. What a thing to hear from your father! I was shocked at how ruthless and evil CSM could be to shoot his own child.

As I said – who *wasn’t* in this one? Krycek was there, seemingly with his feet well under the table and still playing a clever game, keeping in with the Syndicate and yet always out for himself. He had a lot of dialogue, too (lots for ScullysMyHero to savour, and me, come to that!) and he was so cool when he took on the killing of the faceless alien imposter. Marita was in bad way, wasn’t she? I thought for a second there was a touch of compassion on Krycek’s face when he saw how bad Marita looked, but then he spoiled it by sneering.

I liked how Mulder was with Scully over Fowley and felt sorry for Scully when she was trying to fairly expose Fowley (because she didn’t trust her) and Mulder accused her of making it personal. Well yes, it probably was too, but Mulder was not ready to hear that. I liked the bit where M was playing basketball and he came over, talking the talk.

My only criticisms, if I have any, are that there was a lot of stuff gone into, which we already knew quite well as viewers. When CSM was doing his ‘confessional’ to Fowley, for example. And then, we also heard a lot of much more explicit stuff from and about the Syndicate. It was suddenly time to answer questions, which I suppose was inevitable at some stage. I just get a bit disappointed at the conclusion of anything so it bothered me, especially all the flashback stuff.

Good lines :

M: “The truth is out there, Agent Spender. Maybe you should find it for yourself” A little nod to Scully’s line in the pilot? Similarly, a nice movie ref when Alex says "...fight the future" and “It’s all gone to hell”

M: “Scully, want to go one on one?”

K to Spender: “Watch where you point that” like K knew Spender was inept and incapable of spiking the alien and might accidentally spike someone. LOL

M: (on being captured and showering – with Scully!!) “I signed up for the aromatherapy treatment”

M: “Red is the new black”

CSM to Mulder, at Fowley’s apartment, accusing him of a ‘lingerie fetish’

M to CSM: “You gave away your children... you sent them away like they were *things*”

M: “The future is here. All bets are off”

And as for Miss Diana Fowley: Sssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!

Your thoughts on these eps?
