Okay, this theory didn't fly too well with my fellow Americans, so I'll see what you Brit-Philes think of it. Throughout "XF", there has been a lot of speculation about the background between the Mulder/Spender families — a lot of people have thought that either Mulder or his sister were the result of an affair between CSM and Mrs. Mulder. That would have made Jeff Spender the half-brother of either Mulder or Samantha.
After watching these two eps, I decided everybody had it backwards. I think Jeff Spender was indeed Mulder's half-brother. But not because CSM and Tina Mulder had an affair; I think the affair was between Bill Mulder and Cassandra Spender. That might have been why CSM shot Jeffrey; at some point during these eps, he may have tumbled onto the "proof" that Jeff was not actually his son after all.
What do I base this theory on? The fact that during the 1960s (when Mulder, Samantha and Jeffrey all would have been conceived) Cassandra was most likely in her 20s while Tina was probably in her late 30s/early 40s. VERY few men with a twentysomething wife choose to have an affair with a woman over the age of 35; it's a lot more common for a man to have an affair with a woman younger than he is.
So what does everybody think?
